Janesville, WI – small-town America - in the spotlight!
Janesville, WI – small-town America - in the spotlight!
The spotlight was turned on JANESVILLE, WI last Saturday (8/11) when GOP Presidential candidate MITT ROMNEY introduced Janesville, WI native, PAUL RYAN as his VEEP RUNNING MATE! Today the New York Times reports on Paul Ryan's small-town roots. After you read that in-depth feature article, I will have special interest in YOUR comment on the information and perspectives report about JANESVILLE, WI.
The Washington Post announced, "Paul Ryan is Romney’s VP pick, setting up stark choice on budget issues."
Readers of the Janesville Gazette gained a front row seat by the hard work of the Gazette journalists. I think we all owe a SALUTE and GRATITUE to the Gazette editor-in-chief, SCOTT ANGUS and his Gazette staff for their outstanding work to produce the special section F focused on “Paul Ryan’s venture from southern Wisconsin to Washington, DC., took many twists and turns, but it all began in his hometown: Journey from Janesville.” GRATITUDE to you all, SCOTT & STAFF!
Today I gained additional perspective on JANESVILLE, WI as “small-town roots” of Paul Ryan identified as a “Conservative Star.” I am sure that you will gain insights and perspectives reading the indepth feature article in today’s New York Times, “Conservative Star’s Small-Town Roots.”
After you read that feature, I will be MUCH INTERESTED in YOUR comments on their report on JANESVILLE, WI and PAUL RYAN?
The article provides a valuable review of Paul’s boyhood in JANESVILLE, WI.
A meaningful report on his college career at Miami University of OH, citing his “passionate interest in the canon of conservative economic theorists and writers — Ayn Rand and Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman and Ludwig von Mises — who inspired the up-and-coming generation of libertarian-minded activists and lawmakers.”
The article delves into LIFE IN JANESVILLE, WI. – one heading is, “A Janesville Childhood: Fun, Faith and Politics.”
The newspapers from the New York Times to the Washington Post to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to the Wisconsin State Journal to The Janesville Gazette – all of which I read online this morning – are PACKED with articles about JANESVILLE, WI native son, PAUL RYAN! I am sure YOU will read with interest and gain information and perspective.
Even with this tsunami-like wave about PAUL RYAN and JANESVILLE, WI, it is important that WE THE PEOPLE of WI do NOT forget that the PRIMARY ELECTION for our FALL GENERAL ELECTION coming on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 is TOMORROW (Tuesday, 8/14)! Be sure you participate in the selection of candidates, including a CANDIDATE for US SENATE - whether REP or DEM. Remember: WI has the open direct primary.
Here we go…

First: It's very sad that some of you "serious" commentators are willy-nilly over the semantics of the community's status. And if it's such an awful place in which to make your home, please be reminded that roads and highways lead OUT of the municipality: NVgrf can probably suggest a good realtor in Laughton.
. . .
Ryan is a worker. Small minds will attack his sources of inspiration, whether Rand or Friedman, Reagan or Boehner. I'll take that over a man, our president, who as abrogated his sworn Oath of Office! A man who "spoke out" against Washington's status quo and then promptly filled cabinet posts with D.C. insiders groomed by Bill Clinton, among others. A man whose sources of inspiration curse America to damnation and whom openly condemn Christian family values (and an entire business chain), while claiming to espouse cultural diversity and acceptance of all.
. . .
Beginning tomorrow the blush will be off the rose and j. eyster will attack Mr. Ryan via whichever argument he can manufacture.

Idk if I would won't to be bragging by saying I'm from Janesville. I guess it is better than Beloit, but still I would still word it that I climbed out of the darkness to free myself, kind of like the new Batman film lol.

Actually, Janesville is not a town. It is a city. And it is certainly not small. The average size of a city/town in the US today is approximately 7,000. So as Paulie continues to trot out his "I'm just a simple guy from a small town" I hope he has his fingers crossed.

winstonchill~ great question. What I would tell you is this; when enough people in this country take leadership seriously and study it and apply it to their own lives, that's when you start turning the tide. Everyone's looking for the next flavor of politician's to take over office and fix everything. When the truth is, it isn't going to happen. Change in this country has to start from the bottom up. It starts right at the dinner table of families homes. Raising up the generations and making things like virtue and honor a standard instead of video games and "American Idol". Here's the truth, only the courageous will take that look in the mirror and say, "it starts with me". I believe there's people of courage out there, they just need to be led to the light.

The lesser of two evils. Well, at least we have the choice narrowed down to 2.
It's not much of a libertarian government we have here. "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" is a slogan that has little meaning anymore. People want comfort, they want freedom from responsibility. They don't want real liberty. Real liberty involves risk. Risk threatens comfort, and it demands the risk taker to be accountable. That is no longer the American way for very nearly a majority of us now. The only liberty we want now is the liberty to intoxicate ourselves at will without repercussions, to fornicate without consequence (bad consequence, that is), to work as little as possible while being paid a "livable wage", and to look down our noses at anyone who has the comeuppance to succeed beyond our self-limiting level, demanding a "fair share" of their "unearned" recompense to satisfy our bizarre sense of economic fairness. Our government now caters to these desires.
The politician who stands up and says this system isn't sustainable is in for a firestorm of condemnation. That is what's facing Paul Ryan. He had the audacity to say that Medicare needs an overhaul. Now everywhere you look, the demagogues say "Ryan voted to eliminate Medicare!". Or "Ryan wants to starve your Grandma!". You have to admire a person like Paul Ryan. He very well knows the character assassination he's let himself in for. That's what happens when the gravy train riders feel that their fuel supply is threatened. They like riding. They abhor walking. And they will absolutely refuse to help push. Let the "Millionaires and Billionaires" do that!

Your elation hides your dilema Mr. Eyster. I'm sure your activities, especially your involvement with Washington Seminar, have put you in contact with Mr. Ryan many times. You probably like him and consider him a friend.
I am confident that you will vote the Obama-Biden ticket in November which would be in line with the stances you have taken on this blog. But the prospect of a Janesville native being in the white house might give you pause.
BTW, I read the articles and my only comment is that the quote you used involving Ayn Rand was clarified later in the article (The NY Times offering). Are you trying to stir up the fringe with that quote?

According to one of the Secret Service people, they put the crowd at about 13,000 also. I got there at 2pm and it was already crowded. It was a great event.

@bigchip, I like your optimism for sure. I hate to use the cliche', "the lesser of two evils" but it seems that's what we've been resigned to for some time now. I do believe that Romney and Ryan have integrity, however, it's still politics, no matter how you slice it and there's always the compromising of fundamental principles to take care of special interests on both sides. As I said in my previous post, at least the "right" acknowledges the roots of this country as opposed to trying to re-invent the wheel like the Obama regime is doing. This country, every country, every community, every workplace, every family etc. needs LEADERS!

Steve: City leaders have had and will continue to have the small town attitude. Hence another reason to get rid of the city managers position and go back to a mayoral alderman government.

I was at the rally of 13,000 in Waukesha last night. It was awesome. I finally have optimism that the accelerated decline of our country under Obama can be reversed. It is refreshing. This is the dream team. Paul rounds out Mitt. This is a team of integrity and leadership that will restore our decaying liberty.

ImJustSayin; It's hard to argue your point. I would say that at least the right keeps foundational principles in mind and mentions them as opposed to the left who feel it's their duty to fundamentally change all that.

I still don't get why Janesville is considered 'small town'. A city of over 60,000 is hardly small town. Just my opinion.

Yep. Janesville is so important to Paul Ryan's conservative image that his coming out party homecoming was held in Waukesha.

Although Ryan's homeboy status is certainly capturing the imagination of Janesville locals, it is important to carefully examine his politics and their potential impact on Americans in general.
