Shifting from reviewing 2011 to projecting 2012
Shifting from reviewing 2011 to projecting 2012
Last week we were reflecting back on 2011 as we were completing that year… NOW, starting yesterday – NEW YEAR’S DAY – we are looking ahead into our New Year 2012… fascinating change of perspective with HUGE AUDACITY of HOPE for New Year 2012! What are YOU projecting for 2012?
The Janesville Gazette made that shift in its New Year’s Day edition yesterday. PROBLEM: The E-edition was NOT put online! In fact, as of right now this morning it is still NOT online! So, ONLY if you have a P-edition are you able to read the New Year’s Day edition of the Gazette. That created a frustrating start to 2012 for me as a reader of the E-edition 7/7. NOTE: TODAY there is NO Gazette - it is the New Year's Holiday.
So, shifting to other online sources. You know I read the Washington Post along with other resources online every morning 7/7. I worked through the several features of the Post’s “The Year Ahead” section. I encourage YOU to gain information and perspective by checking out these features:
“Top 10 religion and politics stories to watch” I watch for the Georgetown/On Faith feature in the Washington Post because I consider it one of the MOST credible sources on religion and politics since it involves University scholars exploring and debating religion in the news. Check it out.
“Tech trends and storylines to watch in 2012.” This feature provides a fascinating series of 8 graphics with descriptions.
“Five tech predictions for 2012.” Exciting anticipation!
I was interested in the Wisconsin State Journal’s editorial yesterday, “Good news: Headlines we’d like to see in 2012.” Creative recommendations! Which one do YOU like best? Is there a headline YOU would add?
As I look into 2012 in terms of my WE THE PEOPLE blog, I am sure my CAPS KEY will NOT break! Forewarned is forearmed! Thanks to Steve Knox for the reminder that I need to provide the information about my ALL CAPS style, especially for readers who recently started reading gazettextra.com blogs. My first WE THE PEOPLE blog post included that information, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."
I am sure that I hope to continue inciting debates (Here we go…)! I HOPE SO! So far as I understand, a key purpose for my WE THE PEOPLE blog is to incite debates dealing with significant public issues.
I confess that I am baffled by the assertion that I ought to be responding to COMMENTS. Numerous comments assert that I get TOO MUCH of my say in the text of the blog post and want their comments to influence the debate - discussion. I do NOT have time to respond individually to every comment. As a “community blogger” with Gazettextra.com, I am a VOLUNTEER (I do NOT get paid one red cent and neither do the other 11 “community bloggers.”) with editorial/content independence and freedom.
For verification, read the disclaimer on each of the “community blogs” – the one on my blog says, “John Eyster lives in the Edgerton area. He is an adjunct professor of political science at UW-Waukesha and an advocate for democracy/civics education in Wisconsin high schools. John is a community blogger and is not a part of Janesville Gazette staff. His opinion is not necessarily that of the Janesville Gazette staff or management.”
I did read a comment which made an assertion which I challenge: “Every other blogger at this site will take the time to respond to postings, as they should.” I hope that the writer of the comment and others will provide me with documentation that my “community blogger” colleagues are taking time to respond to postings. I’m from Missouri, “SHOW ME!” Please. Thanks!
RIGHT NOW, on this New Year’s HOLIDAY – remember: NO mail. NO Gazette. NO school (in most area districts). NO banks open. – is THE ROSE BOWL GAME with the AUDACITY of HOPE that our UW-Madison BADGERS will win! “GO BADGERS, GO!” Do YOU agree? (Does this incite a debate?! HA!)
Here we go…
Mr. E.
John Eyster lives in the Edgerton area. He is an adjunct professor of political science at UW-Waukesha and an advocate for democracy/civics education in Wisconsin high schools. John is a community blogger and is not a part of The Gazette staff. His opinion is not necessarily that of the The Gazette staff or management.

This is a perfect example of how these comment sections have turned into a p***ing match between commenter’s, instead of comments on the article. Sure the professor is a looney lefty, don't like it, don't read it. Using caps is irritating, but how it can bother anyone as much as it does is just strange. Maybe J W should use underlining to emphasize a point instead. His point seems to be lost on most and he is doing himself a disservice in the process.

Obviously one has free will to respond on their own blog, or to feel so arrogant in that they don't need any response, because their opinion is paramount to all others.
However; it makes the blogger look abysmal when they get shredded to bits, by community "posters" with a counter view. Especially when that counter view is well articulated, and analytically presented. To any 'on the fence' reader, it simply makes the the blogger appear LOST...It's like a trail lawyer just standing there doing nothing, while his point of view is shredded to bits, by the defense. My guess is that the few left reading these blogs, who truly are 'undecided' on an issue, heavily side to the responders in the comments section. As most of the community posters counter views are far better presented, then that of the community blogger.

Not to belabor this silly conversation, but I notice most of your posts are a criticism of other peoples posts. Not only this blog but at others as well. I am not sure how my comments on this blog are in anyway an attack on free speech. First, this blog is written not spoken and all I am offering is a dissenting opinion. I try very hard not comment on other peoples postings unless it is in a positive light. I do however have a problem with the Gazette allowing any person to use a public blog as a platform for bigotry and prejudice. If you actually read my first posting you will see it is addressed to the Gazette and not John Eyester. When I see something akin to that I speak out. I actually do have a blog that I own and write at everyday. Comments are allowed and I answer them when asked. It has nothing to do with social issues, politics or religion.

emac - "If you took my post as some sort of "personal attack" then you are mistaken." So others and I should not be offended that you advocate for censorship of Mr. Eyster's blog? Are you saying that your attack on freedom of speech in this country should not be taken as a personal attack? You have every right to disagree with everything that Mr. Eyster has to say. You have every right to disagree with everything that I post. I am not infringing on any of you rights by what I said in my post as far as I can see – I am only pointing out what you and others are up to. You should be very proud of what you all advocate for I would think.
.
"Maybe you should put some effort into debating what is actually written in Eyster's blog....." Below is your post in its entirety with a date/time stamp. Tell me specifically how this is debating what is actually written in Mr. Eyster's blog please.

I have decided I will post this message every time the Gazette post one of Eyster's blogs.
GAZETTE: Please DISCONTINUE this blog.
Hopefully others will post the same thing and the Gazette will get the message.
.
Request your own blog emac and others. I would really love to read the gems that you all would come up with.

myviews2- I couldn't care less what, when or how you post. It doesn't affect my life in any way, shape or form. If you took my post as some sort of "personal attack" then you are mistaken. I do not know you and will not judge or condemn you. I simply responded to your post which was directed at me and a handful of others who dislike this blog.

All I can conclude from someone who clicks on a blog post, then clicks to see comments, then writes a comment, is that they take some sort of enjoyment from said blog post. Asking the Gazette to discontinue said blog via an online comment is rather ridiculous, since all the clicks required to post a comment is probably increasing revenue for the Gazette.

emac - what is your problem? You seem to want to post what you want but you now attack me for doing the same? Are you going to ask the Gazette to revoke my ID because I stated the truth about you and your ilk?

myviews2- You sure do make a lot of assumptions concerning other peoples motives. I will continue to read Eyster's blog and comment on it as I see fit. Maybe you should put some effort into debating what is actually written in Eyster's blog rather than railing on other peoples comments, just a thought.

If you want the Gazette to remove John Eyster's blog, all you have to do is stop reading it.
That would be a great New Year resolution for some of you.
I don't know how or why you escaped from your bubbles in the first place.

"He is an adjunct professor of political science at UW-Waukesha and an advocate for democracy/civics education"
Since Mr. Eyster is a advocate for democracy, i.e. the majority rules, I'm sure he'd have no problem if the majority of the people want his blog removed from the Gazette.
GAZETTE: Please DISCONTINUE this blog.

With apologies to Mr. Eyster for going off topic so quickly in the new year......
.
I have decided that I will post this message every time that I see a Gazette post of one of emac's, FedUp's, fishingal's, raystone's, saxcat70's, Che's or donnaw's requests to discontinue Mr. Eyster's blogs.
.
GAZETTE: Please IGNORE emac's, FedUp's, fishingal's, raystone's, saxcat70's, Che's and donnaw's request to DISCONTINUE this blog. Obviously emac, FedUp, fishingal, raystone, saxcat70, Che and donnaw do not agree with Mr. Eyster and they are not required to read Mr. Eyster's blog. Unfortunately, these people appear to hate the value of debate and the sharing of differing opinions regarding our great state and nation. emac, FedUp, fishingal, raystone, saxcat70, che and donnaw apparently cannot stand any voice of dissent from their extremist right wing views and are too cowardly to request their own blog from the Gazette. As they have no worthy argument to offset Mr. Eyster's views, many resort to anonymous, viscous and personal attacks on a very learned, intelligent and well respected man who has the courage to openly state his opinions and share his thoughts even in the face of their childish, mean spirited and insulting onslaughts. When these tactics do not work, they then request the Gazette to invoke censorship on their behalf. All this while they want everyone else to trust them and their representatives to protect our rights as they want to run our state and nation? Interpretation for these people – grow up!!!
.
I will continue to add to the list if others do as emac, requests. If you want your name off this list then state that you will quit making this stupid request.

Remember the movie scene in Forget Paris when Ellen's senile father, Arthur, is being driving around town and reads aloud every billboard he sees as they drive by ? "You asked for it, you got it, Toyota..." Mr. Eyster is the Arthur of Gazette bloggers.

Thank you Steve. If you can be "bothered" to take a look at other blogs at this site you will find more of the same. As for not joining the debate just because you are not "paid" to do so just reinforces my assertion that you believe you are somehow "better" than the masses. I expected nothing more from you than your condescending blog offered again today.

As a blogger, I think we should all be a part of the discussion...even after we click 'post'. Does that mean respond to every comment on every blog? No. Like you said, this isn't a paid gig. I chime in when I have a chance. I rarely get personal in my responses because I don't know the users behind the name. My tag line welcomes participation.
