Are WE THE PEOPLE of WI for sale?
Are WE THE PEOPLE of WI for sale?
I do NOT think WE THE PEOPLE of WI can be “bought”/”bribed” to vote for Scott Walker in the Recall Election coming on June 5! Do YOU? This is an issue of WI values in terms of healthy public policy. So, let’s ASK the candidates for the GUBERNATORIAL RECALL to CONTRIBUTE THE MONEY to a JOBS IN WISCONSIN fund. Why NOT?
With the First Quarter 2012 FINANCIAL REPORTS having been filed, we NOW have the reports on campaign contributions to the candidates for GOVERNOR in the RECALL ELECTION. For data and information with perspective, I urge that you read the Wisconsin State Journal’s feature article, “Walker raises $13 million since January.”
This article is enriched by the graphics which complement the text.
Among the key information reported are the following points:
“Gov. Scott Walker raised an unprecedented $13.2 million over three months to fight off the recall bid against him, outdistancing his Democratic challengers and driving home the challenge they will have in beating the Republican incumbent.
“Crisscrossing the country on fundraising trips, Walker has raised more than $25 million since January 2011 and has $4.9 million in cash on hand - numbers unlike any that have been seen for a political candidate in Wisconsin. Two-thirds of Walker's money came from out of state.”
Just think, “Walker's fundraising is on par with that of second-tier presidential candidates. For instance, Rick Santorum raised $18.5 million between Jan. 1 and March 31, and Newt Gingrich raised a little less than $10 million during that period.”
The article asserts, “Walker has been able to raise so much because of the national appeal he developed with conservatives after his high-profile fight with labor unions and a quirk in Wisconsin law that allows unlimited fundraising while recalls are pending.”
For perspective, it is important to note Jay Heck’s (executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin) statement, "Wisconsin's never seen anything like this kind of money. This is all to persuade a relatively tiny universe of undecided voters. It'll be the highest cost per voter spent in the history of the nation in terms of the cost of persuading people." I am NOT FOR SALE! Are YOU?
I myself am concerned about the report of the Journal Sentinel analysis which showed that $4.4 million of Walker's money, or a third of the total, came from Wisconsin donors. The rest came from out of state. EACH of the MAJOR CANDIDATES in the RECALL ELECTION CAMPAIGN have TOOOO MUCH MONEY from OUT-OF-STATE!
There is a quirk in WI law dealing with RECALL CAMPAIGN which is identified by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Normally, donors can give a maximum of $10,000 to a candidate for governor. But from the time recall petitions are taken out to the time a recall election is called, donors can give any amount.” I think this law needs to be repealed. What do YOU think?
I think it is VERY significant and accurate that Democrats are asserting that Walker has been playing to a national audience instead of taking care of business in Wisconsin. Consider the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s feature by highly respected and credible journalist, Craig Gilbert published 1-week ago today (April 24, 2012), “State posts largest percentage job loss in U.S. over past year.”
Note the following specific statistics reported in the article!
“The state lost 23,900 jobs from March 2011 to March 2012.
“The majority - 17,800 - were government jobs. But Wisconsin also lost more private-sector jobs - 6,100 - than any other state over those same 12 months, the government data shows.”
I am thinking there is a great deal of money being WASTED in the RECALL election noting the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s report, “The flurry of fundraising shows how much more costly the recall election will be than previous elections for governor. In the 2010 race, candidates and independent groups spent an estimated $37.4 million, according to estimates by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.”
Just think, “That spending included $11.3 million by Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch. The losing Democrat ticket of Barrett and former Assembly Majority Leader Tom Nelson spent $7.2 million.”
Another dimension of the MONEY being used trying to BUY WE THE PEOPLE of WI is that being spend by OUTSIDE GROUPS. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel identified the following:
- “Outside groups such as the Republican Governors Association and the liberal Greater Wisconsin Committee spent an estimated $12.1 million to run television ads and send mailings to voters, and former U.S. Rep. and home builder Mark Neumann doled out $6.6 million - largely his own money - in a losing bid against Walker in the GOP primary for governor.
“Such independent groups are operating in the recall election as well. The Republican Governors Association and Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce are running ads to help Walker.”
- “On the left, the Greater Wisconsin Political Fund is running an anti-Walker spot, and Wisconsin for Falk is running ads and sending mailers to boost Falk.
“Wisconsin for Falk received $4.5 million in donations, spent $3.9 million and had $517,000 on hand, according to a report filed Monday. It received $3 million from the Wisconsin Education Association Council, $1.3 million from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and $100,000 from the United Food and Commercial Workers union. The AFSCME and UFCW money came almost entirely from their Washington, D.C., offices.”
I find it WORRISOME that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel adds, “Some other groups are able to mask their spending and fundraising.” I support FULL TRANSPARENCY for ALL MONEY flowing into any election campaign. What do YOU support?
The research based on public opinion polls asserts that the political environment in WI is essentially IDEOLOGICAL with 95% of WE THE PEOPLE of WI having made their decision on their vote in the RECALL ELECTION coming on June 5, 2012. This means that the cost for each undecided vote will be VERY HIGH! Worth the “investment”? I myself think the candidates – ALL OF THEM – ought to contribute CAMPAIGN MONEY after the PRIMARY ELECTION coming now on Tuesday, May 8 – to a special JOBS IN WISCONSIN FUND. WHY NOT? What do YOU think?
HAPPY MAY DAY!

I never made the first statement, which is absolutely incorrect. I said "Survival is an instinct," and not "Common Sense is an instinct."
That said, common sense is knowledge; it is clearly not innate. 'Common sense is defined by Merriam-Webster as, "sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts." Thus, "common sense" (in this view) equates to the KNOWLEDGE and experience which most people already have, or which the person using the term believes that they do or should have. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as, "the basic level of practical KNOWLEDGE and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way".' 14th, not 23rd, for the national ranking of percentage of persons with high school diplomas or more. And it's not necessarily a problem of people bypassing college or one of getting people into college. It's keeping them there until they graduate. Scott Walker would be a good example of that. Are you suggesting Scott Walker was not prepped well for a college education?

Exactly. Too bad Kenosha School system wasn't serious about doing the right thing to "help the kids".
Walker responds to Kenosha's request to re-open contract
"After the Kenosha Unified School District last month requested that Gov. Scott Walker grant them a window of time to negotiate potential benefit changes with the teachers union to save teacher jobs, Walker responded Wednesday by putting the onus on the union.
"I am not optimistic of their desire to reach a deal," Walker said in a letter issued Monday, adding that he thought it was important for the Kenosha Education Association to "publicly agree to demonstrate their willingness to honestly engage in these discussions."
At issue is a $28 million deficit in the Kenosha budget, which is likely to result in the elimination of 300 jobs, a Kenosha spokesman said Wednesday.
The move by Kenosha is a step taken out of the Milwaukee Public Schools playbook, but the timing is peculiar because there's no Legislature in session to grant Kenosha the window of time it's seeking to make potential changes to the teachers contract.
While the Legislature was still in session, a joint letter from the MPS administration, school board president and teachers union president asked for a window ot time to negotiate potential benefit changes to the teachers contract.
That window was granted, but the majority of MPS teachers later voted against seeking such concessions.
Kenosha's letter was submitted by the administration and school board. The head of the Kenosha Education Association, meanwhile, has called it a pubilcity stunt."

That's an incredibly naive statement. You may think the "thing" you know is without merit or stupid, but that does not make the fact that you know it to be without merit or stupid. Judging some thing you know to be without merit or stupid can only impart the consequences of that judgment on the "alternative" thing you must already have known.

Third_Eye asked, "So all knowledge must be justified?"
Two important questions in philosophy are "how do we know," and "what do we know?" And the order of those questions is of paramount importance. Common sense is epistomological particularism. It's believing one can know something without knowing how one knows that thing. It's asking "what do we know" before, if ever, asking "how do we know?" Asking "what do we know" before, if ever, asking "how do we know" presupposes that we know and renders our knowledge closed to skepticism. The lack of skepticism is not philosophically or intellectually healthy.

Some people support the Walker because he is prolife and that trumps anything else. Some support Democrats because they they want the government to provide for their every need in life and believe the lie that Dems will do that for them. Others are someplace in between...

But to think that the Money spent on TV ads is really going to change the outcome is pretty silly.
Very few people are undecided on this one.

Now why is it that John Doe and F.B.I. investigations are supposed to be kept secret? Isn't it because if unsubstantiated accusations get out, reputations can be ruined without grounds? Isn't that especially true when the subjects of such investigations are political figures in the midst of political campaigns? Why is that I wonder? I suppose it's because certain people who lack even the most rudimentary sense of fair play and personal honor would use the very existence of such an investigation to smear a candidate for petty political gain, casting aspersions that the existence of an investigation is proof of guilt. Shame on the Milwaukee County D.A. and his office for allowing these leaks to get into the hands of unscrupulous people in violation of the very law he has sworn to uphold for nothing more than petty political advantage for his party. It's a good, thought-provoking read -- those of us in the 99% need to pay attention and stop this now!

"Arthur Kohl-Riggs has maintained a steady presence at protests against Scott Walker over the last fourteen months...He’s been arrested three times on “disorderly conduct” charges or for “other conduct prohibited,” though his alleged offenses have been for filming in the Assembly gallery, or having a camera there,or for silently protesting."
" Kohl-Riggs was co-chair of the campus progressives at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. He served in the student senate there, and went on to work for Greenpeace."

Well, bebe53, Walker has raised $13.1 million this year to date. Barrett and Falk COMBINED have raised $1.9 million. When Barrett defeats Walker, it'll be clear it wasn't because of Barrett's money disadvantage, but in spite of it.
I'm more concerned about the REAL LINCOLN REPUBLICAN in the primary, ARTHUR KOHL-RIGGS [ http://www.iartwi.com ] who has raised just $2,045. Walker has raised more than 6,400 times as much as his Republican primary challenger.

We need campaign finance reform, the reversal of Citizens United, spending limitations and public financing of elections in order to keep politicians honest and allow citizens who aren't rich the opportunity to serve.

Thanks for such a well-written and researched blog, John. I agree with your statement about supporting FULL TRANSPARENCY for ALL MONEY flowing into any election campaign. That said, I think this will be one election that money can not buy.

Yes, Eyster, we are all for sale. You sold out to the DNC, for example.
What remains to be seen is whether or not thug bullying tactics will remove a sitting elected official so that a tiny minority of the state's population gets their sweetheart deal reinstated.
So the question isn't "are you for sale", but rather "will you allow yourself to be intimidated?" Seeing as how the ballot/booth is private, I think you'll be surprised at how many people repudiate the thugs.

Are We the people of Wisconsin for sale? No, but it appears our state motto "Forward" is free for the taking by the Obama campaign.

Alright John, I know you know that the Democrats have raised a lot of out-of-state money for the recall elections, too. So what are you upset about? That Governor Walker does it better than the candidate of your choice? You complain that we the people of Wisconsin are for sale, but apparently that's not really true. What you really seem upset about is that the wrong buyers might win.
You know, when you see evil in the things your political opponents do but ignore the same actions by your political allies, that's proof that you've allowed your partisanship to blind you to the truth, which makes your rants like the one above rather pathetic. Not that I think your partisanship will let you see that fact either.

It takes a lot of money to fight the out-of-state unions. Remember, they spend about $40 Million fighting Walker in Wisconsin last year. This year, they may spend more! Besides, you people wanted this silly recall; and now you sit there and whine!

I am reluctant to put faith in my fellow man and his/her support of politicains. Perhaps the game of politics is best left "rendered unto Caesar." Shouldn't we reserve our faith for church? How will the election turn out? Maybe prayer is in order, at this point in time, isn't it?

I seem to recall a candidate for Sheriff in Rock County a few years back that took his retirement money and spent it on the election. Bought all kinds of stuff with his name on it. Outspent his opponents by a wide margin. He lost in the primary.
Just saw a story about a mother who bought a billboard because her daughter was running for prom queen. She didn't even make court.
I guess that sometimes voters actually look at the candidates and issues and vote accordingly.
I guess that sometimes an election cannot be bought.

All politicians are for sale and have been for 30-40 years. Washington and state houses are run by corporations and the wealthy. Get your heads out of the sand and pay attention people.

"There is a quirk in WI law dealing with RECALL CAMPAIGN which is identified by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Normally, donors can give a maximum of $10,000 to a candidate for governor. But from the time recall petitions are taken out to the time a recall election is called, donors can give any amount.”
An unintended consequence of the recall folly.
So your idea is to modify this part only?

Walker and the Kochs and their ilk were able to buy the Office of the Governor once, but now that the public has been educated as to what his objective is, I hope the voters will do their homework instead of watching and listening to their ads. And in my district it'll not only be the governor and lt. gov., but the state senator is also being replaced. Walker and his buddies are so blinded by greed that they forget that they work for all of the people -- not just those with money.

“There is a quirk in WI law dealing with RECALL CAMPAIGN … I think this law needs to be repealed.”
Allowing recalls without cause is a pretty darn big quirk in itself. Change that one, so that recalls are only allowed via an impeachment process, and you can go ahead and modify the contribution law.
“I myself think the candidates – ALL OF THEM – ought to contribute CAMPAIGN MONEY … to a special JOBS IN WISCONSIN FUND. WHY NOT?”
Well, because the people who contributed that money did so for a specific purpose, which had nothing to do with the jobs fund. Do you liberals sit up nights thinking of ways to spend other people’s money? Why don’t you yourself contribute this year’s earnings to the jobs fund. WHY NOT?
